Lt. Tohji Miura was the commandant of the Aceh group and escaped any form of punishment. He was characterized by a pow as not unkind, but an utterly feeble person who allowed himself to be bullied by his Korean subordinates. The pow believed it wasn't his actions that were the crime, instead being his inaction. When he died in 1975 he was already a very sick man having had one leg amputated and refusing to remove the other. He died in Kyoto.

Before his death he conversed with a few ex pow's regarding the war. Below are some of his letters sent to Mr van Heekeren. In them he blames the circumstances and his superiors, believing himself free from any guilt.
