Born in 1889, Tanabe graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1910. He served in China in the 1930's and was Vice Chief of Staff of the Japanese Army's General Staff from 1941 to 1943. He was then sent to Sumatra, where he took command of the 25th Army.
